Obviously, if you are away from your subject, they are less likely to know that you are photographing them and that they are natural and relaxed. Using a telephoto lens or long zoom allows you to shoot from outside their personal space, but keep the feeling of intimacy in the shot you’re taking.

Kill the flash

The most obvious way to signal to another person you’re photographing is to use a flash. There is no such thing as a blinding flash in the eyes to kill for a moment. If possible (and this is not always the case), try to take photos without flash if you are aiming for candid shots.
When you increase your setting in low light conditions, use a fast lens, open your aperture, or turn on your camera if it’s a natural light mode. Let’s hope that one or a combination of these approaches helps you to blend in a bit more.

Images of people doing things are more interesting than people sitting around doing nothing passive. For one, your subject is focused on something that energizes the photo (and takes their attention away from you) but it keeps them in context and adds an element of story to your image.
Timing is everything in candid shots, so wait until they get distracted from you and focus completely on what they are doing or who they are and you get a feel for your shots that you don’t know and the viewer of your image is invisible.

Get Posed Shots into Candid Territory

One of my favourite times to shoot candid shots is when other people are taking it for granted. This is because everyone in the shot is focusing on one element.
The main photographer looks for a different perspective if they are wearing a happy couple of the day or their wedding is somewhat of the same thing. Often you can get great shots if you take a few steps to the side and shoot from an almost profile position.

Group shots

Immediately after the ceremony is the perfect time for group shots because everyone is still gathering around. Quickly move the list of group shots from your bag to start the session.

Start with parents, immediate family members and the wedding party first, and if you have more time, try to get as many group shots as you can. If time is limited, you will have the opportunity to continue with the list at the party venue.
